how do you manage/cope?

Postby azcountry » Wed Oct 14, 2009 2:51 pm

For me, my spiritual beliefs are a big help when it feels like I'm never going to find real relief - I get so tired going from doctor to doctor, etc. and though my family is a big support, they don't always get it. I'd be interested to know how you cope through the really bad times - what works for you? Sometimes it feels like prayer is all that gets me through.

Pain Relief Specialists Northwest has always maintained that treating the whole person is essential to achieve the best outcomes for pain management. This includes assessment and support for the spiritual resources that a person presents with. This is always with full respect of the person's existing beliefs and preferences. Sadly, many patients present to us with limited to no spiritual support system. Our focus is termed multi-disciplinary including multimodal pharmacologic therapy; interventional injections with x-ray guidance; physical therapy modalities; psycho-social counseling; and spiritual support as mentioned.

My sister lives with terminal cancer, and at times the pain (usually from treatment) is more than she can bear. She once told me that one night when her pain was at its worst, she got down on her knees and prayed for God's help. She said that up until then she would pray (and she is very faithful and dedicated), but she was still trying to cope with it herself. This night she finally gave up and completely gave her pain over to God. After that prayer she actually slept and woke up the next morning in a very managable state of pain. Her lesson to me? You can't ask for God's help and then do all kinds of other things "just in case", you have to truly give your pain over to him. Now I am not saying stop all treatments or don't go see a doctor, but when you are home alone and are in pain and decide to pray, make sure you give Him everything.
